About Me

Welcome to Capitally Frugal!

I’m so glad that you took a moment to visit Capitally Frugal!  I’m Sarah, the compiler of store deals, freebies, product reviews/giveaways, and everyday savings for the Washington DC Metro area.  My primary job is being a wife to my IT hubby, John, and a stay-at-home mom to my fiesty, life lovin’ three year old daughter (known on here as “little A”).  But, in between the craziness of playdates, erasing crayon wall art, and unburying myself from the ever-multiplying loads of laundry, I enjoy blogging at Capitally Frugal.

My frugality journey began over four years ago, when I became pregnant with my daughter.  My husband & I always knew that I would stop working once we had children, but the reality of seeing half our income evaporate was just a tad bit unsettling.  I began to research ways I could cut our expenses and even augment my husband’s salary.  At that time, money saving blogs were just beginning to surface, and I began religiously reading Crystal Paine’s daily tips at Money Saving Mom!

It was an enormous amount of trial and error – mostly, “error” on my part and “trials” for my husband who had to listen to me!  I can’t begin to tell you the times I worked so hard to compile my coupons for a trip to the store, only to find that the cashier missed a coupon, an item was out of stock, or the universe somehow decided to conspire against me. :)   But, by 2008, I *mostly* figured out the couponing system and was able to get the majority of our household items or toiletries free at CVS or Harris Teeter Super Double Coupon Events.  With these savings, we were freed up to spend a little extra on natural and organic groceries and to be able to help friends and family.

Over time, I expanded my “couponing” to mystery shopping, product reviews, and other fun projects.  But, I was hesitant to delve into the blogging world.  Instead, I would email friends and family whenever I saw a great deal that I thought they might like.  But, as time wore on and with the encouragement of friends (especially my husband!), I decided to launch Capitally Frugal, a central location for all my great finds. In the beginning, I assumed my only readers would be family members and close friends (who read my blog out of pity), but I’ve been (happily!) shocked to see how quickly Capitally Frugal has grown!

In the coming months, I hope to add even more features, such as sale and coupon matchups for all the stores in the DC Metro area, a Weekend Activities feature, an ongoing calendar of all the cheap family programs available in DC, and even more product reviews and giveaways, as a way to give back to my wonderful readers!  And, while all of our deals are valid in the Washington DC Metro area, the majority are also valid throughout the United States.  So, even if you don’t live in the DC Metro area, there will always be something for you!  Thank you again for stopping by, and I hope each of you find encouragement to spend wisely and live frugally, by reading Capitally Frugal.
