We LOVE the Dandelion Patch and the National Harbor!  Here’s a great excuse to visit both: the Dandelion Patch will be celebrating their grand opening at the National Harbor, on July 19, 2012 from 6-8PM.

To help cut the ribbon will be: Montez Anderson, from the Economic Development office of Prince George’s County; Julia Grillo, Miss Maryland; Carolyn Howell, Fun Company Events; Obie Patterson, Prince George’s County Council-member; Teresa Scanlon, Mrs. Maryland; and Bob Aqua and MIX 107.3 FM.

The first 25 people to register in advance with a friend, and attend the ceremony with that friend, will receive a $25 gift card!  Please RSVP to nationalharbor@thedandelionpatch.com.  There will also be tons of goodies and giveaways for the first 25 people who make a purchase.  They will have a stellar raffle that will be full of door prizes from our retail neighbors at National Harbor.  And, did we mention – free food from The Sunset Room by Wolfgang Puck? Yumm!

And, if you’re headed to the National Harbor, don’t forget to visit the wonderful Gaylord National, just a few steps away!  On July 19th, their Atrium Aerial Dances will be performing at 8:30 PM.  Suspended from our 19-story glass ceiling, Arachne Aerial Arts is a dynamic duo that twirls and spins with innovative choreography. It’s an enchanting spectacle you’ve got to see.  The best viewing spot is at Belvedere Lobby Bar.

Visiting DC-Area Waterparks On A Dime

by sarah on 06/28/2012

A.V. Symington in Leesburg

With the triple digit temperatures of the DC-area, I’m sure many of you are looking for “cooling” activities to do with your children!  What better way to spend a blistering hot summer afternoon then enjoying water slides and lazy rivers?  I’ve compiled a list of the water parks in the area, along with coupons or discounts they offer!  Several readers have suggested purchasing an Entertainment Book, for the great water park coupons they offer.  In the past, we’ve skipped the coupons and headed to our local water park after 5PM for their significant “after peak hour” discount.  How about you?  How do you beat the heat without breaking the bank?

And, when you’re headed to the pool, here are a few tips to make sure your trip goes a little smoother!

*Bring sunscreen – I can’t emphasize how important this one is!  My husband has turned into a lobster more times than I can count, because he’s forgotten it.  In fact, he keeps a spare bottle of sunscreen in our car now!  To save a little extra, there are printable coupons for $1 off Coppertone and $1 off Banana Boat Suncare.

*Swim Diapers – ah, yes, for those children are not potty trained, the essential Swim Diapers.  No water park/pool/aquatic center will let a child in without them.  (And, no, you can’t substitute regular diapers for them – don’t ask me how I know!)  To purchase swim diapers for slightly less outrageous prices, visit Amazon or print this coupon for $1 off Huggies Little Swimmers.

*Avoid crowds – visit on weekdays or during twilight hours.  Not only is it cheaper, but lines are not as long!

*Bring water – hydration, hydration, hydration! :)   With the triple digit temperatures hitting the area, it’s so important to keep hydrated.  Kids generally hate stopping to get a drink of water, but I try to call “A” in for a drink, every 15-20 minutes.  Pick up a case of water at Costco (one of the cheapest places!), and you won’t have to spend the outrageous prices at the waterpark kiosks!

A.V. Symington Aquatic Center – Leesburg, VA
The A.V. Symington Aquatic Center is a part of Ida Lee Park and features a 600-foot lazy river, large slide tower with two body flumes, drop slide, 25-yard lap pool, two gang slides, water pipe fall, crossing feature, dumping buckets, little squirt whale and floating snake and alligator.  Additionally, a large “beach” area with bubblers and water fountains, a concession stand and a grass picnic area are all available for the swimmer to use.

Admission is $6 ($7 weekends) for Leesburg adults (ages 16-59), $9 ($10 weekends) for non-resident adults (ages 16-59).  Babies ages 2 and under are free; and, youth prices are $1 cheaper than the adult rate.

Hours
Town of Leesburg Residents 11:00 am – 8:00 pm*
Non-Town of Leesburg Residents 12:00 pm – 8:00 pm *

SPECIAL HOURS
*Starting Monday, August 8 the A.V. Symington Aquatic Center will be closing at7:45pm.  Beginning on Monday, August 22, closing will be at 7:30pm.  This is due to earlier sunsets.

To save a little money, you can visit A.V. Symington after 5PM, and the rates (for Leesburg residents) is $4 – for out of town guests, it’s $6.  You still get to enjoy the waterpark until closing (8 PM); it’s not as crowded; and, the heat isn’t as brutal!  It’s definitely a win-win-win situation!  Also, A.V. Symington offers fun Youth Discount Days (admission is discounted by $1 for children, ages 15 and under). To read more…

Verizon Center, in Washington, DC, is welcoming the Dreamworks’ extravaganza, “How To Train Your Dragon,” from July 19-22, 2012.  And, today, Living Social is offering discounted tickets to the show!  All tickets come with a gift bag featuring a fiber-optic light, a light-up medallion, and a keychain.

Based off DreamWorks’s Animation’s Academy Award-nominated film How to Train Your Dragon, this eye-popping live spectacle brings the world of high-flying, fire-breathing dragons to life.  The Sydney Morning Herald raves that, “The technical wizardry is second to none.” This epic production features 23 massive animatronic dragons that really walk, fly, and breathe fire. Measuring in at up to 20-feet tall with 46-foot wingspans, these majestic creatures interact with live actors to tell the tale of a teenage Viking growing up to tame these wild beasts. From the creators of Walking with Dinosaurs, this production combines expert puppetry, aerial acrobatics, nine movie-theater size screens, and the astonishing animatronic technology to create a visual even that cannot be missed. With a score composed by Jónsi of the Icelandic band Sigur Rós rounding out the production, How to Train Your Dragon is nothing short of awe inspiring.

Living Social offers you the choice of Five Ticket Levels:

    • $39 for a 400-level ticket for 7/19 at 7 p.m. or 7/20 at 1 p.m. (a $78 value)

One of my favorite sites is ScoreBig, a discount website for concerts and sporting events around the country!  For those penny pinchers out there, you are more than likely aware of Priceline.  You know, that site where you can bid on airfare, hotel, and car rentals?  ScoreBig is a very similar type of website – you can sort the events by city, date, and venue type.  And, then, you have the opportunity to bid on the show of your choice.  I love that they offer a note, as to what price the last tickets were sold.  That way, you don’t bid $0.50 for $100 seats and waste your time.  ScoreBig is particular great for those of you who are planning to visit New York City – tickets to many Broadway shows are between 10%-50% off!

ScoreBig also offers many great shows for the DC Metro area at venues from The Kennedy Center and Wolf Trap to The Verizon Center and Jiffy Lube Live.  In fact, last year, my best friend and I scored $10 tickets to Les Miserables at The Kennedy Center – we were just the tiniest bit excited over that!

And, right now, The Capitol Deal is offering a $20 voucher to ScoreBig for just $2 to make tickets even more affordable!  Be sure to check out the long list of summer concerts on the ScoreBig website.  Some of the ones that caught my eye are Kelly Clarkson at Jiffy Lube Live; a Nationals versus Braves game; Sugarland’s 2012 Tour; the National Symphony Orchestra at Wolf Trap; and Pirates Penzance!
