I was so excited to hear that Columbia Sportswear is opening TWO stores in the DC area, at the Leesburg Premium Outlets and at the Queenstown Premium Outlets!  My husband, who generally is not very brand loyal, makes an exception for Columbia, and swears by everything from their backpacks to their hiking boots.  But, at times, it can be tough to justify a $150 pair of shoes into our shoestring budget, even though they do last forever!  So I was thrilled that they will be opening an outlet store (read: discounts!), just minutes from our home.

The first grand opening celebration will be held at Leesburg Corner Premium Outlets, next week Friday, August 3, 2012 at 10:00 AM.  It coincides perfectly with Tax Free Weekend in Virginia[During this three-day period, purchases of certain school supplies, clothing and footwear will be exempt from the Virginia sales tax. Each eligible school supply item must be priced at $20 or less, and each eligible article of clothing and footwear must be priced at $100 or less.]  Following that, Columbia is opening another store on August 17, 2012 at the Queenstown Premium Outlets in Queenstown, MD, again at 10:00 AM.

And, in addition to no sales tax during the Leesburg opening, the Columbia Sportswear Outlet will also be offering 15% discounts before noon on opening day, gift with purchase all weekend (while supplies last), and a $10 gift card for the first 50 shoppers!

Vintage Baseball Day at the Oatlands Plantation
On Saturday, July 28th, Oatlands will be hosting a Vintage Base Ball Day, a game of base ball played by the rules of the Civil War era.  Be part of the crowd and go back in time to a Sunday long ago, when the object of the game was action rather than outs.  No gloves, no helmets or catching gear, and the uniforms are authentic wool replicas.  The bats and balls are also authentic replicas.  There will be concessions and vendors.  Admission is at the gate on the day of the game and is $20 per car, van or motorcycle and $50 per bus. The game will last between 1 and 1-1/2 hours–pitchers duel?  or hitters heaven?  Come see!

Shark Weekend at the National Aquarium
Celebrate Shark Weekend at the National Aquarium, Washington, DC, by getting up close and personal with several shark species and learning from leading experts on the history, lives, and habits of one of the world’s most fascinating ocean dwellers.  Participate in a scavenger hunt, touch an actual shark tooth and other artifacts, and more!  Shark feeding is at 2:00 PM on Saturday!  Admission fees are $9.95 (ages 12-59); $4.95 (ages 3-11); and free for children under 3.

Free Fireworks Show at Gaylord National
Be dazzled by Gaylord National’s free fireworks shows over the Potomac River, every Saturday night at 9:30 PM. It’s an unforgettable way to end a summer evening.  Weather permitting. Subject to change without notice. No coolers, glass, or outside food and beverages allowed on hotel property or waterfront areas.

Kids Visit Free at the Newseum All Summer
The Newseum will waive its admission fee for all youth visitors ages 18 and under, regularly $12.95, from July 1 through Labor Day, Sept. 3, 2012.  The Newseum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Admission is $21.95 for adults, $17.95 for seniors (65 and older), and $12.95 for youth (7 to 18).

Loudoun County Farmers’ Markets
Over the weekend, Loudoun County offers a number of wonderful Farmers’ Markets throughout the area.  I attended the Leesburg Market last weekend, and was very pleasantly surprised to find the wealth of fresh and delicious fruits and vegetables they offered!  While prices are comparable (or a little more expensive) than you would find in our nearby grocery stores, the produce is definitely fresher and lasts considerably longer.  For more information and to find a Farmers’ Market near you, click here.
