Family Entertainment in Washington DC
Free “How To Train Your Dragon” Mini-Performance at Gaylord
Kids and families are invited to see a real Baby Dragon – a life-size and stunningly realistic creature from the DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon Live Spectacular show – at Gaylord National Resort on Saturday, July 7. This performance is free and open to the public. From 6:00 – 6:15, the Dragon will join the other DreamWorks characters (Shrek, Kung Fun Panda, etc.) as they march thru Gaylord’s Atrium interacting with guests. And, from 7:45 – 8:00 PM, the Baby Dragon and his Viking Trainer will give a live, 15-minute performance that features many fun, interactive moments with the kids in the audience. Kids will learn the three important lessons every young dragon trainer should know and will become an “Official Dragon Trainer” for the day. Kids will also receive a special coupon valid for discounted tickets to the DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon Live Spectacular show, coming to Washington, D.C.’s Verizon Center, July 19-22, 2012.

Kids Visit Free at the Newseum All Summer
The Newseum will waive its admission fee for all youth visitors ages 18 and under, regularly $12.95, from July 1 through Labor Day, Sept. 3, 2012. The Newseum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Admission is $21.95 for adults, $17.95 for seniors (65 and older), and $12.95 for youth (7 to 18).
Patriotic Celebration at Marker-Miller Orchards
Marker-Miller Orchards in Winchester, VA offers pick-your-own peaches (Starfire) and blackberries. This Saturday, July 7th, is their Patriotic Celebration: they will have music from 1-3, wagon rides, the cow train, wine tasting, and the food building will be open. Don’t forget about their strawberry slushees and hand dipped ice cream, they’re great ways to cool off during these hot days. There is no admission fee.
Loudoun County Farmers’ Markets
Over the weekend, Loudoun County offers a number of wonderful Farmers’ Markets throughout the area. I attended the Leesburg Market last weekend, and was very pleasantly surprised to find the wealth of fresh and delicious fruits and vegetables they offered! While prices are comparable (or a little more expensive) than you would find in our nearby grocery stores, the produce is definitely fresher and lasts considerably longer. USA & Alexandria Birthday Celebration
Enjoy a concert by the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra, birthday cake, food and fireworks, on Saturday, July 7th. The evening culminates in Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture.” Concert at 6, fireworks at 9:30 at Oronoco Bay Park. Free!
Smithsonian Folklife Festival
From July 4-8, from 11 AM – 5:30 PM, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival is held outdoors on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., between the Smithsonian museums. There is no admission charge. At the annual Smithsonian Folklife Festival, you will find many exemplary practitioners of diverse, authentic, living traditions—both old and new. There will be evening musical concerts and younger visitors can try their hand at scheduled activities throughout the day, including quilting, mural painting, portraiture, sculpting, and designing with stained glass.
