Family Entertainment in Washington, DC
Marine Corps Marathon for Kids!
The Marine Corps Marathon Healthy Kids Fun Run presented by The Washington Post will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2012 in the Pentagon North Parking Lot. Nearly 3,600 children ages 5-12 will participate in the one-mile just-for-fun event. All participants receive a t-shirt, medal and snacks at the finish line. The Kids Run hosts six separate starting times. An individual young runner’s designated wave is indicated on the official participant bib as noted by color, start time and bib number.
Fall Family Day at the White House
On Saturday, October 27, there will be lots of fun, family activities throughout DC. Activities include making carnival masks at the Art Museum of the Americas (OAS); an art safari at the Corcoran Gallery of Art; making beeswax candles, season-themed magnetic puzzles, and colonial toys at the DAR Museum; a scavenger hunt at the Octagon House; a scavenger hunt through the Renwick Gallery; family-themed activities at the White House Visitor Center.
Fall Harvest Family Days at Mount Vernon
Mount Vernon welcomes the autumn season with Fall Harvest Family Days, October 27 and 28, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The entire family enjoys autumn activities including wagon rides, wheat treading in the 16-sided barn, 18th-century dancing demonstrations, a straw bale maze, farrier (blacksmithing) demonstrations, apple-roasting, corn husk dolls demonstrations and early-American games and music. Potomac River sightseeing cruises are half-price this weekend only. Fall Harvest Family Days are included in regular Estate admission: adults, $15.00; children ages 6-11, $7.00; and children under 5 are admitted free.
Pumpkin Picking at Wegmeyer Farms
They are open Thursday- Sunday from 10 to 6 each day. As always, there is no admission fee and pumpkins are 50 cents per pound. The corn maze is open when the farm is open weather permitting, and the cost is $5 per person (2 and under free). Their scenic and fun educational hayride will be running all day on Saturday and Sunday. The charge per person is $5 (2 and under free). For those that want to do both the hayride and corn maze, the discounted price is $8 total.
Apple Picking at Marker Miller Orchards
This Saturday is their Pumpkin Festival!! Come out and find “the great pumpkin” in their pumpkin patch. They have pick your own apples available: Yorks, Romes, Stayman, and Nittany. In the market we have 12 varieties of apples to choose from (on Friday, Pink Lady will be available). They also have many desserts made with pumpkin to celebrate the day: pumpkin carrot cake, pumpkin donuts, pumpkin rolls, pumpkin bars, and of course pumpkin pies!
Butler’s Orchard Pumpkin Festival
Every Saturday and Sunday in October from 10 AM – 5 PM, head to Butler’s Orchard for their Pumpkin Festival. Festival admission is $11.00/person, and children 2 and under are free. They offer a corn bin, hayrides, straw maze, corn hole, giant slides, pumpkin coach, pumpkin polls, jump in the hayloft, pedal tractors, pumpkinland, and much more!
Loudoun County Farmers’ Markets
Over the weekend, Loudoun County offers a number of wonderful Farmers’ Markets throughout the area. I attended the Leesburg Market last weekend, and was very pleasantly surprised to find the wealth of fresh and delicious fruits and vegetables they offered! While prices are comparable (or a little more expensive) than you would find in our nearby grocery stores, the produce is definitely fresher and lasts considerably longer.
