See the Meerkats in 3D at the National Geographic Museum

This giveaway has ended.  Congratulations to our winner, Trisha!

Are you starting to plan your children’s Spring Vacation activities?  The National Geographic Museum in Washington DC has a number of wonderful family-friendly events, starting in March.

On March 8, “Real Pirates” will open at the National Geographic Museum (and stay up through September 2), making it an ideal stop for families in town during spring and summer school breaks. “Real Pirates: The Untold Story of the Whydah from Slave Ship to Pirate Ship,” tells the story of a slave ship turned pirate ship and the diverse people whose lives converged on the vessel. Many of the artifacts from the ship will be on display in the exhibit, including weapons such as swords, cannons, muskets and pistols as well as daily necessities such as tools, kitchen utensils, buttons, coins and personal belongings from the captain’s quarters. In addition, visitors can climb aboard a replica of the ship and experience what it was like in the captain’s quarters and below deck.

Looking for a unique birthday party venue?  The National Geographic Museum has got you covered!  In conjunction with the new exhibit, the Museum will also be offering “Pirate Birthday Parties” which will include a private party room, goody bags filled with fun pirates treasures, a private tour and treasure hunt in the Real Pirates exhibit led by National Geographic staff, and much more.

Additionally, The National Geographic Museum will be showing the film “Meerkats 3D,” beginning March 2 in its Grosvenor Auditorium.  Narrated by Oscar-nominated actress Emily Watson, “Meerkats 3D” takes audiences on a journey with a family of meerkats as they cope with the twists and turns of life in the Kalahari Desert. Three viewings will be held each Saturday and Sunday through the spring.

And, lastly, the Museum invites children ages 9 to 16 to sign up for “The Art of Nature Writing”, a writing class for the next generation of National Geographic writers. Taught by New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Holland, the course is $30 per child  and will be held on Saturday, March 9.  Tickets can be purchased here.

Price
Surprisingly, the cost of seeing a movie at the National Geographic Museum is minimal, especially compared to the going price of movies these days!  To see the 3-D Movie, tickets are $7.  If you’d like to see the 3-D Movie plus have admission to the Museum, the price will be $16 for adults and $12 for kids.  Or, if you’d prefer to skip the movie and just peruse the Museum:

Admission to the National Geographic Museum
Adults – $8
Members/Military/Seniors (over 62)/Students/Groups (25+) – $6
Children (ages 5–12) – $4
School and Youth Groups (18 and under) – Free (for info on how to reserve a trip, click here)
Photography exhibitions in the Museum’s M Street gallery and outdoors are free.

Admission may be purchased online, in person, or by calling 1 (202) 857-7700 Monday through Friday 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM EST.  A per ticket transaction fee will be assessed at check out for online purchasing. There is no additional fee for tickets purchased in person. Tickets allow for entry every 30 minutes. You may enter the museum at any point within your ticket’s 30-minute window, or at alternate times if there is availability, and stay as long as you wish. There are no refunds or exchanges.

Hours

The last tickets will be sold at 5:15 p.m. with entry allowed until 5:30 p.m., with 30 minutes until closing.
