Shrek the Halls!

This giveaway has ended.  Thanks to all who entered!  Our lucky winner is Gloria!

Last weekend, our family had the wonderful opportunity to enjoy Gaylord National’s amazing ICE! production. Each year, Gaylord hosts 40 international artisans from China, who work for a month to transform two million pounds of ice into a 15,000 square foot winter wonderland that dazzles the DC Metro area.  The ICE! exhibit is based on China’s world famous “Ice and Snow” show, that showcases thousands of ice structures over a 100-acre area.  While Gaylord National’s carvings cover a much smaller area, it is still breathtaking! The Puppet Show at Pumpkinville

This giveaway has ended.  Congratulations to our winner, Natalia!

This past weekend, we had the terrific opportunity to visit Pumpkinville at Leesburg Animal Park.  Starting at the end of September and lasting through November 4th, Leesburg Animal Park creates an amazing Fall Festival with fun activities for the whole family!

Feeding the Hungry Antelope

Since my daughter loves animals (at least, from a safe distance!), we toured their “zoo” first.  As you enter the park, you have the option of purchasing food to feed their large menagerie of animals; and, I assure you, it’s worth the investment.  I normally put the kibosh on such extraneous purchases, but my husband pointed out the muttering parents that were headed back to the little store to purchase animal food for their sobbing children.  So, I took his advice, and purchased enough food for the hungry pigs, the overly friendly deer, the slightly suspicious antelope, and the aloof zebras.  The few dollars we spent was definitely worth the excitement my daughter derived from chatting with the animals as she hand fed them!   Tip: Be sure to pack hand sanitizer or wipes to wash your children’s hands after they feed the animals. October 4, 2012 Declared Habitat for Humanity Day in Gaithersburg

Habitat for Humanity, started in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller, provides affordable housing to struggling families. Millard, a self-made millionaire by the age of 29, found his personal life crumbling before his eyes, despite his apparent success in the business world.  After serious thought, he recommitted his life to the Lord and took some drastic steps.  He and his wife sold their possessions, gave their money to the poor, and began a minimalist life.

In 1973, Mr. Fuller, his wife, and their four children moved to Zaire to test, what would become, Habitat’s housing model.   Their vision was to build houses at no profit and offer no-interest loans to homeowners.  But, homeowners, wouldn’t just receive a home.  They would be required to put in “sweat equity” by not only helping with the construction of their own home but also with the building of other Habitat structures.

Mr. Fuller’s housing model was so successful that he returned to the United States in 1976, and founded Habitat for Humanity.  Today, Habitat for Humanity is responsible for building more than 500,000 houses and sheltering 2.5 million people worldwide.

Kishia James

You might be wondering how Habitat for Humanity works in the “real world.”  I had the opportunity to chat with Kishia James, a member of the Habitat for Humanity Montgomery County family for the past two years.  Over five years ago, a friend suggested that Kishia look into Habitat’s program; but it wasn’t until 2010, that she began seriously researching it.  After attending an information gathering session (the only meeting not cancelled due to a sudden snowstorm!), she turned in all the necessary documents to begin the Habitat screening process.  It turned out that she was the perfect candidate for the program!  The apartment she shared with her mother and baby daughter was over thirty years old and in desperate need of repair.  Habitat for Humanity quickly deemed it unsafe due to the mold infestation and the non-existent insulation, that left her with outrageously high electricity bills.

Once Habitat selected her family for housing assistance, they purchased a foreclosed home in a great neighborhood for her.  But, they didn’t just hand over the keys and move on to the next case.  Instead, she attended Habitat classes that ranged in topic from simple home repair taught by Home Depot experts to the “how-to’s” of making savvy money choices.  And, she was kept busy putting those home improvement lessons to good use, as she helped renovate her new home, doing everything from painting to pulling up old carpet.  She still shudders at how tedious it was to remove every tack strip/staple from the floor, before they could laid down new carpet.  But, it was all that “sweat equity” that made move-in day so special!

For their part, Habitat for Humanity installed energy-efficient windows, top-of-the-line insulation, a fence, and many other amenities to make Kishia feel at home. And, with the money she is saving from a no-interest loan, Kishia is building her three-year old daughter’s college fund.  As we spoke, she reiterated her gratitude for Habitat for Humanity’s help in providing her daughter with a safe environment, and says she truly hopes to sponsor a family someday.

John Paukstis and Edward Hummbers, Jr.

October 2012 marks 30 years that Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County has been helping people like Kishia.   When asked what Habitat for Humanity’s most important contribution has been, John Paukstis, their executive director, said, “I can’t imagine anything better than transforming the lives of people who are in sub-standard living conditions by providing them with decent, affordable, and energy-efficient homes.”  Their latest project is building the Maple Hill subdivision, which will provide 19 families in the Montgomery County area with a new townhome in Gaithersburg, MD.

ReStore Montgomery County

In order to help pay for these humanitarian building efforts, Habitat for Humanity has started ReStores throughout the country.  ReStores, discount home improvement centers, are solely dependent on donations and are a paradise for homeowners on a budget.  My husband loves perusing the ReStore in Purcellville, VA, where many contractors discard their unused building supplies and no-longer-needed, state-of-the-art appliances from model homes.

And, from what I’ve heard, the ReStore in Montgomery County is even more fabulous and offers a huge selection of new and gently used furniture, antiques, appliances, and building supplies.  Even better?  They have weekly sales!  Just follow them on Facebook to keep up with their weekly discounts.  Their 5th Annual Holiday Shoppe, your one-stop discount shop for all your Christmas decorations, is coming very soon, and I’ll be sure to post more details as it gets closer!

If you’re planning to throw out some gently used furniture or appliances, please consider donating it to your local ReStore.  For those of you who live in Montgomery County, they will be happy to pick up your donations.  And, all ReStores are very grateful for those who can volunteer a few hours.  If you live in the DC Metro area, be sure to visit their website to find a ReStore near you.  By donating, shopping, or volunteering, you can be a part of Habitat for Humanity’s efforts to transform lives!

Today, October 5th, is the LAST day to enter our super fast giveaway for tickets to the Big Apple Circus on Monday, October 8th (otherwise known as Columbus Day!).  A huge thank you to Washington Family Magazine for sponsoring the giveaway!

Big Apple Circus at Dulles Town Center

Our family attended the Wednesday evening performance of the Big Apple Circus and loved every minute!  From the hilarious ring leader to the nonsensical clowns, we were spellbound!  This year’s theme is the history of the circus; so, in addition, to all the superb acts, they also offered interesting pieces of trivia that took you back in time to the opening of Central Park and the Industrial Revolution.

No Circus Is Complete Without Horses!

Our first experience with the circus was attending the Big Apple at Dulles Town Center, last year.  And, while we enjoyed ourselves then, we thought this year’s performance was infinitely better!  Personally, I loved the music – the live band played popular tunes you’d hear at circuses in years past.

The Phenomenal Contortionist Who Made My Neck Hurt Just Watching!

And, for those of you with children, you won’t have to worry about them becoming bored.  The acts were short and fast paced and the music was loud enough to drown out any squawks and screeches they might make!  :) {There is an intermission half way through the performance, so you can get up and take your children to the bathroom or purchase some yummy circus food.}  Our four year old was riveted in her chair and did not make a peep the entire 1 hour and 50 minutes.  And, to quote her, “Mommy, the best part of the night was the horses that bowed.”

Three Men and a Flying Lady

For the adult contingent of our party, we enjoyed the couple who tangoed while they juggled (pretty impressive to us, since we can neither tango nor juggle!), the ladies who did amazing tricks with their bikes, and the gentleman who rode a unicycle on the slack line.  It was a terrific performance, and a wonderful way to spend the evening.  The Big Apple Circus will only be at Dulles Town Center for the next four days, so I encourage you to head there this weekend!  And, be sure to enter our giveaway for a family, four-pack of tickets to the Circus on Monday, October 8th.

Starting this Saturday, October 6th, the National Geographic Museum in Washington, DC will be showing a 3-D movie: Sea Monsters 3D: A Prehistoric Adventure.  This movie will bring to life the extraordinary marine reptiles of the dinosaur age, when the American Midwest lay under a great inland sea where colossal creatures ruled the waves. From giraffe-necked Styxosaurus and sea birds with teeth to the T. rex of the ocean—the 40-foot super-predator Tylosaurus—these wondrous beasts defy imagination. In a remarkable journey, National Geographic Museum immerses audiences in this unexplored world of the “other dinosaurs,” delivering the creatures brought to life on the big screen in 3-D.

For those of you who have never visited the National Geographic Museum, they offer a wide variety of changing exhibits.  Right now, you can see exhibits ranging in topic from “Wicked Weather” to “The Next Generation of Photojournalists.”  And, coming in October, you’ll find different events, such as a lecture from legendary climber, Peter Athans about the “Sky Caves of Nepal” and a collection of pictures from Chris Ranier that illuminates “Cultures on the Edge.”

Update: To read our review, click here.

This week, the Big Apple Circus will be performing at the Dulles Town Center!  Their theme is “Legendarium” and will be filled with spectacular feats from flawless jugglers, astounding acrobats and a contortionist with a backbone flexible as an archer’s bow.  And, they promise that you’ll sit no more than 50 feet from the ring!

You and your family will laugh at the antics of hilarious clowns, “ooh and aah” over the magnificent horses and playful pooches, and hold your breath as the aerialists soar overhead! With an affable Ringmaster as your guide, watch as an amazing inventor spins in a giant steel hoop and a fearless finambulist astonishes the crowd!  The performance runs two hours, including one intermission.

Last year, we attended the Big Apple Circus and I was a little worried about our (then three year old) lasting through the entire performance.  But, she was spell-bound from the second we entered the tent!  We all had a wonderful time and are looking forward to seeing the clowns and acrobats later this week.   Be sure to check back for a review of our experience!

Photo Credit: Photographs in the Carol M. Highsmith Archive, Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division

Without question, the Library of Congress is my favorite part of Washington, DC.  Now, there are many museums that are a close second, but none are quite as breath-taking as the largest library in the world.

And, twice each year, the Library of Congress opens its Main Reading Room for a special public open house.  Normally, the Main Reading Room is only open to researchers (ages 16+) who have a Reader Identification Card.  This Fall, their open house will be on the upcoming federal holiday, Columbus Day, Monday, October 8, 2012 from 10 AM – 3 PM.  You’ll have the chance to take pictures, browse through the 70,000+ reference materials, and listen to reference librarians discuss the Library’s vast onsite collections, including services and collections for use in family history research.  The Main Reading Room can be found on the first floor of the Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First Street, SE, Washington, DC.

The Jefferson Building, which will also be open to the public between 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM, features the Great Hall and the Library of Congress exhibitions, which include “Exploring the Early Americas.”  Unreserved guided tours of the Thomas Jefferson Building will be offered at 9:30 AM, 10:30 AM, 11:30 AM, 12:30 PM, 1:30 PM, 2:30 PM, and 3:30 PM.  Each tour is limited to 40 people and designed to accommodate individuals and families, not large groups.

For those of you with young children, the Library of Congress welcomes children, teens and adults to the Young Readers Center, (Room LJ-G29), a place designed especially for young people.  You can bring your child to read books or participate in a story time (suitable up to age eight).  Young people are encouraged to explore the center’s library of current and classic books, which can be read onsite. Adults can also read aloud to their children from a selection of preschool-appropriate books by the nation’s best authors and illustrators. This collection of books is noncirculating, and readers are encouraged to check with their school and local public libraries for copies that they can borrow and enjoy at home to complete their reading.  The Center is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

To get there, you can take the Metro to the Capitol South Stop, served by the Orange and Blue lines.  The stop is near the corner of 1st and C Streets SE.  Metrobus stops are located near the Library grounds, and schedules can be obtained at the Capitol South subway station.

The Newseum in Washington, DC

Congratulations to our winner, Tracy!  Thanks to all who entered!

In 2008, Washington, DC became the home to an impressive 250,000 square foot museum of news, The Newseum!  What most people don’t realize is that the Newseum has been in existence since April 18, 1997, when it first opened its doors in Rosslyn, VA.  It wasn’t the glass-encased, awe-inspiring building it is now; but, I remember enjoying a visit to its former home when I was in high school.  My parents still have the VHS tape of me reading the news before a live camera.  And, when I proudly showed the tape to my grandma, she was convinced that I would be the next Walter Cronkite.  Ah, grandparents!
